About the routes
What exactly is a Free Tour Free?
It’s a free, self-guided walking route. Each one brings together a GPS map and several stops, each with an illustrated article and an audio guide. You can follow it on the street or read it from home.
Is it really free?
Yes. There’s nothing to pay, no sign-up and no tip. All the content is open.
Do I need to book?
No. You can start whenever you like. There are no schedules, limited places or meeting points.
How long does each free tour take?
Each route gives an approximate duration, but there’s no time limit: you can stop, skip a stop or carry on another day.
GPS and audio guide
How does the GPS work?
In guide mode, the map shows your position and the distance to the next stop. When you arrive, we’ll let you know and show you a photo and a few clues to recognise the spot. Your location never leaves your phone.
How does the audio guide work?
Your phone reads each stop’s text aloud in your language. There’s nothing to download; the voice quality depends on your device.
Can I do the route offline?
For now you need a connection to load the texts, images and maps.
Content
Where does the information come from?
From books, archives and verified sources, and every text is reviewed by a person before it’s published. When a tale belongs to oral tradition, we say so explicitly.
Can I suggest a correction?
Yes. We’re a living publication and well-documented corrections help us improve. Write to us via the contact page.
