Djinn, sea spirits and golden mirages: the legends of Deira

Before television and air conditioning, Dubai’s nights were filled with stories. Fishermen, pearl divers and grandmothers passed down tales of djinn and strange creatures, told to frighten, to teach and to explain the sea and the desert. On this walk through old Deira we tie each legend to a real place: the Creek, the souks and the city’s first school. And at every stop we carefully separate what is documented from what belongs to oral tradition.
