Madrid in 1 day

  • 1 day
  • 8.5 km on foot
  • 16 stops
  • Audio guide

One day is short for Madrid, but it is enough to understand its heart: the squares and the Royal Palace, the centuries of the Habsburgs and the legends told as the light fades. It is a long day on foot, with three free walks and two stops to eat, made for anyone who arrives in a hurry and with good shoes.

One day in MadridHabsburg Madrid, from sun to shadow

Start around nine at Puerta del Sol with “Madrid for the first time”: Plaza Mayor, San Miguel Market, Almudena and the Royal Palace, unhurried and ahead of the queues. Have a cocido madrileño for lunch; it works wonders after the morning. In the afternoon, “From Habsburg Madrid to the modern city” leaves Plaza de la Villa and ends at the Congress of Deputies; the centre is so compact you hardly need transport. As the sun drops, “A Madrid of shadows and secrets” sets off from the House of the Seven Chimneys and finishes on Calle de la Cabeza. Round it off with a bocadillo de calamares.

Before you go

Tips for Madrid in 1 day

  • Wear comfortable shoes: you will cover about 8.5 km with several slopes, especially going down from the Royal Palace towards the river and back up to the centre.
  • Madrid eats late: if you finish the mystery walk at nine, the taverns will be packed. Book ahead or arrive early for the calamari sandwich.
  • Summer afternoons are hard going: carry water, use the shade of Plaza Mayor and keep the afternoon walk for when the heat eases.

Questions

Madrid in 1 day: your questions

Can you see Madrid in one day?

The essentials of the historic centre, yes. In one day you walk the squares, the Royal Palace and the Madrid of legends. The big museums, such as the Prado, and the Retiro have to wait: they need another day.

How far do you walk on this itinerary?

The three walks add up to about 8.5 km (3.0 for the essential one, 3.1 for the historic one and 2.4 for the mystery one), not counting the trips to restaurants. With the breaks, that is a lot of time on your feet, so wear good shoes.

Where should I start if I only have one day?

At Puerta del Sol first thing, with the “Madrid for the first time” walk. It is kilometre zero, well served by the metro, and a few steps from Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace.
