Medellín in 1 day

  • 1 day
  • 5.1 km on foot
  • 16 stops
  • Audio guide

One day in Medellín is enough to get to know its downtown, where the city keeps its history. This plan strings together three short, flat walks: the highlights in the morning, history in the afternoon and legends as the sun goes down. It suits a stopover or a first taste of the city, and it ends with dinner in a residential neighbourhood, away from the downtown bustle.

One day in MedellínBronzes, palaces and ghosts

Start mid-morning in Plaza Botero with “Downtown Medellín highlights: from Botero to Junín”, which carries on past Berrío Park and the Coltejer to the Metropolitan Cathedral. Have a bandeja paisa on Junín and refuel: the afternoon belongs to “From the village of La Candelaria to the railway city”, from the Palace of Culture to Botero’s birds in San Antonio Park. Around half past four, “Medellín of lost souls, hidden streams and ghosts” sets off from La Veracruz and ends on Avenida La Playa. From there, take a ride-hailing taxi to Mondongo’s, in Laureles or El Poblado, for a bowl of mondongo antioqueño.

Tips for Medellín in 1 day

  • Downtown is at its best by day and on weekdays, when the shops are open and the squares are busy. On Sundays it empties out, and after dark it is better not to linger on quiet streets.
  • As locals say, no dar papaya – don’t make yourself an easy target. Keep your phone away between stops, wear your backpack in front on Junín and in Berrío Park, and leave the jewellery at home.
  • Medellín is famous for its eternal spring, but afternoon showers are common: pack a light rain jacket and use the downpour as an excuse for a tinto under cover.

Questions

Medellín in 1 day: your questions

Can you see Medellín in one day?

You can see its downtown. The three walks cover the essentials of the historic centre: Plaza Botero, Goovaerts’s palaces, San Antonio Park and the legends of La Playa. Comuna 13, the Metrocable and El Poblado are left out and need at least a second day.

How far will I walk?

The three walks add up to about 5.1 km (1.3 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 1.8 at dusk), almost all on the flat. With the stops, lunch and a coffee or two, it is a long day but a manageable one.

Is downtown Medellín safe for tourists?

By day and with normal precautions, yes: it is a very busy centre with plenty of shops and a visible police presence. Stay alert in crowds, don’t flash your phone and, once night falls, use a ride-hailing taxi rather than walking down empty streets.
