Berlin in 2 days

  • 2 days
  • 8.7 km on foot
  • 18 stops
  • Audio guide

Two days let you cover the centre without rushing and still look into the Wall's legacy. The first day mixes monumental Berlin with the northern neighbourhoods; the second is about twentieth-century history and Kreuzberg. There is time for proper lunches, and the mystery route closes day one with a different mood.

Day 1From the Brandenburg Gate to the Wall

Begin with the Best of Berlin route: Brandenburg Gate, Bebelplatz, Museum Island and Alexanderplatz. Have a currywurst at Konnopke's in Prenzlauer Berg. That puts you a short walk from the Bernauer Straße memorial and the Mauerpark, so the afternoon almost plans itself. As the light drops, head back to the centre for Hidden Berlin, with its mummies and ghosts between the Humboldt Forum and the TV Tower. Dinner is an Eisbein at Zur letzten Instanz.

  2. Lunch

Try Currywurst at Konnopke's Imbiß. Schönhauser Allee 44B

  3. Afternoon

    Berlin Wall Memorial

The Bernauer Straße memorial keeps a real stretch of the border strip, with a viewing tower and a documentation centre. It is the best place to grasp what the Wall was actually like. The Mauerpark is a ten-minute walk away, so the two pair up easily.

    Directions

    Mauerpark

A park laid out on the former death strip, now full of lawns, street musicians and, on Sundays, a flea market and open-air karaoke. It is a pleasant place to slow down after the memorial, and Konnopke's is just around the corner.

    2. St. Nicholas' Church and the NikolaiviertelThe oldest church in old Berlin guards the city's great riddle: nobody knows when it was born or what its name means.
    3. Parochial Church (Parochialkirche)Beneath this baroque church lie dozens of Berliners who were mummified by accident.
    4. Zur letzten Instanz and the medieval wallOne of Berlin's oldest taverns leans on the last remains of its city wall… and on a couple of legends.
    5. St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche)A Dance of Death painted after the plague, and a stone cross recalling a murder.
    6. TV Tower (Fernsehturm)The great symbol of atheist East Germany reflects a cross in the sunlight that Berliners dubbed “the Pope's revenge”.

Day 2Living history and Kreuzberg

Spend the morning on From the Reichstag to the Wall: the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, Topography of Terror, Checkpoint Charlie and Gendarmenmarkt. It is a dense route, so do not rush it. For lunch cross over to Kreuzberg and order Königsberger Klopse at Max und Moritz. Afterwards ride the elevated U-Bahn down to the Spree: the afternoon belongs to the painted Wall and the bridge, with time for a stroll along the river.

Questions

Berlin in 2 days: your questions

Is two days enough for Berlin?

For the historic centre and the memory of the Wall, yes. Charlottenburg, Potsdam and most museum interiors will be left out. Two days gets you the essentials without feeling rushed.

How much walking is involved?

The three routes come to about 8.7 kilometres; with the extras and getting around, a little more. Spread over two days, that is a comfortable pace if you stop for lunch.

What should I book in advance?

The Reichstag dome and, if you want to go inside, the Museum Island museums. Everything else can be done without a reservation. Check opening times, since several places close one day a week.
