Cairo in 2 days

With two days, Cairo stops being a race. There is room for an afternoon at the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum and another at the Citadel, without giving up the three walks through downtown, medieval Cairo and the Coptic quarter. It is a balanced plan, demanding but manageable, to see the essentials without stress.

Day 1Bazaars, pyramids and Coptic Cairo

Begin with “From the Paris of the Nile to the Great Bazaar”: Tahrir, the Egyptian Museum and Opera Square all the way to Khan el-Khalili. Have a koshari at Abou Tarek and head for Giza, where it is best to arrive with the whole afternoon ahead, since traffic is slow. Save the return for the evening: “Moving Mountains and Cradles on the Nile” awaits in Coptic Cairo, with the Hanging Church and the crypt of Abu Serga. Finish with ful and taamiya for dinner downtown.

Day 2Sultans, walls and a citadel

At midday, have rice pudding and umm ali at El Malky, in the al-Hussein district. From Bab Zuwayla, the Citadel and the Sultan Hassan Mosque are a short walk away: a medieval finale to round off the trip.

Tips for Cairo in 2 days

  • The pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum lie outside the centre. Plan that afternoon with a booked car or a taxi app, and do not leave it for the last hour of the day.
  • Cairo rewards early starts: less heat and less traffic. In summer, keep the long outdoor visits for first thing in the morning.
  • Dress respectfully for mosques and churches: shoulders and knees covered, and shoes that are easy to slip off. A light scarf helps at the entrance.

Questions

Cairo in 2 days: your questions

Is two days enough for Cairo?

It is enough for the main sights: downtown, Islamic Cairo, the Coptic quarter and an afternoon at the pyramids. It does not allow for museums at leisure or for Saqqara. If you can, the three-day plan spreads the pace better.

How far do you walk over these two days?

The three walks add up to about seven kilometres: four on the first day downtown, a little over one in Coptic Cairo and two on the second day along al-Muizz Street. The extra stops add walking within each site.

How do you get to the Giza pyramids?

The simplest way is a taxi or ride-hailing app from downtown; the trip usually takes between 40 minutes and an hour depending on traffic. Avoid rush hour and agree the round-trip fare if you take a street taxi.
