One day in Shanghai goes a long way if you plan it well: three neighbourhoods, each telling a different chapter of the city. In the morning, the villas and lanes of the French Concession; in the afternoon, the banks of the Bund facing Pudong's skyscrapers; as the light fades, the temples and lanterns of the Old City. It's a full-on plan for a layover or a flying visit, and you'll leave with the whole picture.

One day in ShanghaiThree Shanghais in one day

Start early with “French Concession Highlights”, while the plane trees on Sinan Road are still quiet: from the First Congress House in Xintiandi to Fuxing Park, where people dance and practise tai chi at that hour, and on to the lanes of Tianzifang. A short taxi ride drops you in the Old City for xiaolongbao at Nanxiang. Then metro line 8 takes you up to People's Square for “From the Racecourse to the Bund”, along Nanjing Road to Waibaidu Bridge. Head back to the Old City around sunset for the gods-and-pirates walk, and have hongshao rou for dinner next to Chenxiangge.

Tips for Shanghai in 1 day

  • The three areas are only a mile or so apart, so there's no need to walk every step. The metro is usually fastest, with English signs and a security check at the entrance; many travellers pay with the Alipay QR code, which generally accepts foreign cards. Check before you arrive.
  • Google Maps, Google and Wikipedia usually don't work in China without a VPN. Before you travel, download offline maps of Shanghai or test a map app that works there, and save the stop names in Chinese too so you can show them to taxi drivers.
  • To see the Bund at its best, reach the riverside promenade in the late afternoon: first the golden light on the stone façades, then, shortly after, Pudong lighting up across the water. Summer is hot and humid, so bring water, a cap and comfortable shoes — the day adds up to a lot of steps.

Questions

Shanghai in 1 day: your questions

Can you see Shanghai in one day?

You can see the heart of the centre: the French Concession, Nanjing Road, the Bund and the Old City, which is exactly what this plan covers. You won't have time for museums or for the observation decks in Pudong; for those, add a second day.

How far will I walk in one day?

The three routes add up to about 7.6 km (4.7 miles): 2.5 km in the French Concession, 3.3 km from the racecourse to the Bund and 1.8 km in the Old City. You can do the hops between areas by metro or taxi; walk them and you'll add another three or four kilometres.

Do I need cash in Shanghai?

Almost everything is paid by phone, with Alipay or WeChat Pay, which usually accept foreign cards once you register with your passport. Still, carry a little cash in case the app fails or a small stall can't take your account. Check how to set them up before you go.
